Romania is located in southeastern Europe, in the region of the Carpathian Mountains and the Danube basin. It borders Ukraine to the north, Moldova and the Black Sea to the east, Bulgaria to the south, Serbia to the southwest, and Hungary to the west. Its territory covers approximately 238,400 square kilometers, making it a medium-sized European country. Its position has historically placed it at the crossroads of Balkan, Central European, and Eastern influences.

The country is crossed by several major rivers, the most important being the Danube, which forms much of Romania’s southern border before flowing into the Black Sea and creating the renowned Danube Delta—one of Europe’s most valuable natural reserves. Other significant rivers include the Olt, the Mureș, and the Prut, the latter marking the border with Moldova. Romania’s geography is diverse: the Carpathian Mountains dominate the central region, surrounded by vast plains and plateaus, while the coastal areas along the Black Sea complete a balanced landscape that supports both agriculture and tourism.

Administratively, Romania is divided into 41 counties (județe), along with the municipality of Bucharest, the capital, which holds a special status. Each region of the country has distinct cultural and economic characteristics, from historic Transylvania to the Moldavian region and Wallachia.

Romania’s population stands at around 19 million people, placing it among the more populous countries of southeastern Europe, though it has experienced a demographic decline in recent decades.
