India has some of the most important river systems on the planet. Major rivers include the Ganges, which is both economically and culturally significant; the Indus, the Brahmaputra, and major southern rivers such as the Godavari, Krishna, and Narmada. These rivers are essential for agriculture, water supply, and hydroelectric power, supporting hundreds of millions of people.

India’s geography is extremely diverse. The Himalayan mountain range dominates the north, forming a natural barrier, while the Indo-Gangetic Plain stretches across much of the northern and central regions and is one of the most fertile areas in the world. The southern part of the country is largely occupied by the Deccan Plateau, bordered by the Western and Eastern Ghats, and India also includes deserts, tropical forests, and long coastlines, resulting in a wide variety of climates.

Administratively, India is divided into 28 states and 8 union territories, each with varying degrees of autonomy. The country has a population of approximately 1.43 billion people, making it the most populous nation in the world. While urban centers continue to grow rapidly, a significant portion of the population still lives in rural areas.
