The map shows international borders as well as the boundaries of France. The map does not label regions or large cities, and doesn’t include rivers.
France is located in Western Europe, occupying a strategic position between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It shares land borders with Belgium and Luxembourg to the north, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy to the east, and Spain and Andorra to the south.
Its metropolitan territory covers roughly 551,000 square kilometers, making it one of the largest countries in Europe. In addition to its mainland, France includes several overseas regions and territories around the world, which extend its cultural and geographic reach.

The country is shaped by several major rivers that play key roles in its historical development and economic activity. The Seine flows through Paris and serves as an essential transport route; the Loire, the longest river in France, crosses the country from east to west; the Rhône connects the Alps to the Mediterranean; and the Garonne drains the southwest into the Atlantic.
France’s geography is diverse, featuring fertile plains in the north and west, mountain ranges such as the Alps and the Pyrenees, and a mix of plateaus and river valleys that support agriculture, industry, and tourism.
Administratively, France is divided into 13 metropolitan regions and 5 overseas regions, which are further subdivided into departments and communes. Each region has its own economic and cultural identity, contributing to the nation’s overall diversity. France’s population exceeds 67 million people, positioning it among the most populous countries in Europe and giving it significant influence within the European Union.
