Costa Rica is located in Central America, forming part of the narrow land bridge that connects North and South America. The country covers an area of approximately 51,100 square kilometers, making it one of the smaller nations in the region.

The country has numerous short rivers that flow toward either the Pacific or the Caribbean, shaped by its mountainous terrain and high rainfall. The most important rivers include the Reventazón, the Tempisque, the San Juan, which forms part of the border with Nicaragua, and the Pacuare. These rivers are vital for hydroelectric power generation, agriculture, and freshwater ecosystems.

Costa Rica’s geography is highly varied, featuring mountain ranges, volcanoes, fertile valleys, tropical rainforests, and extensive coastlines. The Central Mountain Range and the Talamanca Range run through the country, with fertile plateaus in between. The nation’s diverse landscapes support rich biodiversity and contribute to a range of tropical climates influenced by altitude.

Administratively, Costa Rica is divided into 7 provinces, which are further subdivided into cantons and districts. The country has a population of approximately 5.2 million people, with a large proportion living in the Central Valley, including the capital city San José, while coastal and rural areas are less densely populated.
