Austria is located in Central Europe and is a landlocked country positioned between Western and Eastern Europe. It borders Germany and the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia and Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. The country covers an area of approximately 83,900 square kilometers, placing it among the medium-sized nations of Europe.

The country is crossed by several important rivers, the most significant being the Danube, which flows from west to east and connects major cities such as Linz and Vienna. Other notable rivers include the Inn, Drava, and Mur, all of which play key roles in Austria’s hydrology and hydroelectric power generation. Austria’s geography is largely dominated by the Alps, which cover much of the territory and shape a mountainous landscape with deep valleys, alpine lakes, and broader plains in the eastern regions, particularly in the Vienna Basin.
Administratively, Austria is divided into nine federal states (Bundesländer), each with its own regional government. These states display considerable cultural and economic diversity, ranging from alpine regions to highly developed urban areas. The country’s population is around 9 million people, with most inhabitants concentrated in Vienna, the capital, and other major cities such as Graz, Linz, and Salzburg.
