Australia is located in the Southern Hemisphere, in the region of Oceania, between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Australia covers an area of approximately 7.69 million square kilometers, making it the sixth-largest country in the world by land area.
Australia’s river system is relatively limited due to its arid climate. The most important rivers form the Murray–Darling Basin, including the Murray River, the longest in the country, and the Darling River. Other significant rivers include the Murrumbidgee and the Cooper Creek system. These waterways are crucial for agriculture, water supply, and regional ecosystems.
The geography of Australia is highly varied, featuring vast deserts, plains, mountain ranges, and extensive coastlines. The interior is dominated by arid and semi-arid landscapes, while the Great Dividing Range runs along the eastern coast. Australia also includes tropical rainforests in the northeast and fertile agricultural regions in the southeast and southwest. This diversity results in a wide range of climates, from tropical to temperate and desert.
Administratively, Australia is divided into six states and two major territories: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory. The country has a population of approximately 26 million people, concentrated mainly in coastal cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth.
