Asia is the world’s largest and most populous continent. It spans both the Northern and Eastern Hemispheres and is bordered by the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Indian Ocean to the south, and Europe to the west.
The boundary between Asia and Europe is commonly defined by the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus region, and the Black Sea. Asia is composed of 49 internationally recognized countries and covers an approximate area of 44.5 million square kilometers.

Geographically, Asia is extraordinarily diverse. It includes vast deserts such as the Gobi and Arabian deserts, extensive river systems like the Yangtze, Ganges, and Indus, and dense tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia. The continent also features major plateaus—such as the Tibetan Plateau, often called the “Roof of the World”—and fertile plains that support large population centers.
Asia is home to some of the highest and most prominent mountain ranges on Earth. The Himalayas, located in the south-central region of the continent, contain many of the world’s tallest peaks. The highest point in Asia is Mount Everest, on the border between Nepal and China, reaching 8,848 meters above sea level. Other significant peaks include K2 (8,611 meters) and Kangchenjunga (8,586 meters). These mountain systems are the result of ongoing tectonic activity that continues to shape Asia’s landscape.
