The northern region of Lapland is more rugged and sparsely populated, while southern Finland contains fertile lowlands and the majority of urban centers. Administratively, Finland is divided into 19 regions, which are further subdivided into municipalities. The country has a population of approximately 5.6 million people, concentrated mainly in the southern part of the country, particularly around the capital city Helsinki and its metropolitan area.
