Mexico is located in North America, occupying the southern portion of the continent. It borders the United States to the north, Guatemala and Belize to the southeast, and is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and south, the Gulf of Mexico to the east, and the Caribbean Sea to the southeast. The country covers an area of approximately 1.96 million square kilometers, making it one of the largest countries in the Americas.

Mexico has several major river systems, although many rivers are relatively short due to the country’s mountainous terrain. The most important rivers include the Rio Grande (Río Bravo), which forms much of the border with the United States, the Grijalva–Usumacinta system, the largest in terms of water volume, the Lerma–Santiago River, and the Balsas River. These rivers are vital for agriculture, hydroelectric power, and water supply, particularly in central and southern regions.

The geography of Mexico is highly diverse, dominated by mountain ranges, high plateaus, deserts, tropical forests, and long coastlines. The Sierra Madre mountain systems run through much of the country, while the Mexican Plateau occupies the central region. Northern Mexico is characterized by arid and semi-arid landscapes, whereas the south features jungles and mountainous terrain. This diversity results in a wide range of climates, from desert to tropical.

Administratively, Mexico is divided into 31 states and Mexico City, which serves as the capital and a federal entity. The country has a population of approximately 129 million people, making it one of the most populous nations in the world. Population density is highest in central regions, particularly around Mexico City and other major urban centers, while large areas of the north remain sparsely populated.
