Ireland, officially the Republic of Ireland, is located in Western Europe and occupies most of the island of Ireland in the North Atlantic Ocean. It shares its only land border with Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, while the rest of the country is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Irish Sea, and St George’s Channel. Its total surface area is approximately 70,300 square kilometers, placing it among the smaller to medium-sized countries in Europe.
The country has an important river system, with the River Shannon being the longest in Ireland. It flows from north to south before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. Other significant rivers include the Liffey, which runs through Dublin; the Lee, in the southwest; and the Boyne, which holds great historical importance. These rivers have played a key role in the country’s agricultural, urban, and economic development.

Ireland’s geography is characterized by a large central lowland surrounded by coastal mountains and hills. Notable highland areas include the Wicklow Mountains, near Dublin, and the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks in the southwest, where the country’s highest peak, Carrauntoohil, is located. The coastline is highly irregular, featuring cliffs, bays, and peninsulas, contributing to Ireland’s diverse landscapes and its mild, humid oceanic climate.
Administratively, Ireland is divided into 26 counties, traditionally grouped into four historical provinces: Leinster, Munster, Connacht, and Ulster (the latter shared with Northern Ireland). The country has a population of approximately 5.1 million people, concentrated mainly in urban areas such as Dublin, Cork, Limerick, and Galway. In recent decades, Ireland has experienced significant population and economic growth, strengthening its position within the European Union.
