Bulgaria is located in southeastern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula. It borders Romania to the north, Serbia and North Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey to the south, and has a coastline along the Black Sea to the east, giving it strategic access to maritime routes. The country covers an area of approximately 110,900 square kilometers, placing it among the medium-sized nations of southeastern Europe.

The country is crossed by several important rivers, the most significant being the Danube, which forms much of Bulgaria’s northern border with Romania. Other major rivers include the Maritsa, the largest river in southern Bulgaria, as well as the Iskar and the Struma, which play essential roles in agriculture, water supply, and hydroelectric power. Bulgaria’s geography is notably diverse, featuring wide plains in the north, the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina) stretching across the center of the country, and high mountain ranges in the south such as Rila and Pirin, home to the highest peaks in the Balkans.
Administratively, Bulgaria is divided into 28 provinces (oblasts), which serve as the main units of territorial administration. These provinces oversee local governance and regional development. Bulgaria’s population is approximately 6.5 million people, with a large share concentrated in urban centers such as Sofia, the capital, along with Plovdiv and Varna, against the backdrop of a long-term demographic decline.
