Greece is located in southeastern Europe, at the crossroads between the Balkans, the Mediterranean, and the Near East. It shares land borders with Albania to the northwest, North Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north, and Turkey to the northeast. The country is surrounded by the Aegean Sea to the east, the Ionian Sea to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south.

Covering roughly 131,900 square kilometers, Greece is a medium-sized European nation known for its extensive coastline—one of the longest in the world—and its rich historical legacy.

Although Greece is more famous for its seas than its rivers, it is traversed by several important waterways. The longest is the Aliákmonas, while other significant rivers include the Achelous, the Pinios, and the Evros, the latter forming part of the border with Turkey.

The country’s geography is highly diverse, marked by rugged mountains such as the Pindus range, fertile plains in regions like Thessaly and Macedonia, and a vast archipelago of more than 2,000 islands, including Crete, Euboea, Rhodes, and the Cyclades. This varied terrain shapes the climate, economy, and settlement patterns across the nation.

Administratively, Greece is divided into 13 regions (peripheries), which are further subdivided into regional units and municipalities. Each region reflects distinct cultural, geographic, and economic characteristics, from the mountainous landscapes of Epirus to the insular environments of the Aegean islands.

The country’s population is approximately 10.3 million people, with a significant concentration in major urban centers such as Athens, the capital, and Thessaloniki. Despite demographic challenges in recent decades, Greece remains a key cultural and geopolitical actor in southeastern Europe.
