The country is shaped by an extensive network of rivers, the most prominent being the Amazon, which forms the backbone of the northern region and drains the largest rainforest on Earth. Other major rivers include the São Francisco, Paraná, and Tocantins–Araguaia systems, all central to the nation’s agriculture, energy production, and transportation. Brazil’s geography is remarkably diverse, spanning the Amazon Basin, tropical coastlines, the Brazilian Highlands, the Pantanal wetlands, and the semi-arid Sertão.

Administratively, Brazil is divided into 26 states and one federal district, which together form five major geographic regions: North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South. Each region has distinct cultural, economic, and environmental characteristics. The country’s population is estimated at over 203 million people, making it the most populous nation in South America and one of the largest in the world.
