Albania is located in southeastern Europe, in the Balkan region, with coastlines along the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. The country covers an area of approximately 28,700 square kilometers, making it one of the smaller countries in Europe.

Albania’s river system consists mainly of relatively short but fast-flowing rivers. The most important are the Drin, the longest river in the country, along with the Vjosa, the Seman, and the Shkumbin. These rivers cross mountainous regions and coastal plains and are essential for agriculture, hydroelectric power generation, and water supply.

The geography of Albania is predominantly mountainous, dominated by the Albanian Alps in the north and several mountain ranges in the interior. Only a narrow western coastal plain offers flatter terrain. The country features a wide variety of landscapes, including valleys, lakes, and a rugged coastline, with a Mediterranean climate along the coast and more continental conditions inland.

Administratively, Albania is divided into 12 counties (qarqe), which are further subdivided into municipalities. The country has a population of approximately 2.8 million people, with a strong concentration in the capital city, Tirana, and in major urban centers such as Durrës and Vlorë, amid ongoing demographic changes influenced by emigration.
