South America is located in the Western Hemisphere, mostly in the Southern Hemisphere, and is connected to North America through the Isthmus of Panama. It is bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Despite being surrounded by vast bodies of water, it maintains cultural and historical ties with the rest of the Americas.

The continent is composed of twelve sovereign countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela. It also includes the overseas territory of French Guiana. This diverse group of nations brings together a wide range of languages, cultures, and traditions that shape the region’s identity.

South America’s geography is striking and varied, featuring the Andes Mountains, the longest mountain range in the world; the vast Amazon rainforest and river basin; and major rivers such as the Amazon, Orinoco, and Paraná. The continent’s highest peak is Aconcagua, located in Argentina, which rises to about 6,960 meters (22,837 feet) above sea level, making it the tallest mountain outside of Asia.
