Africa is the third-largest continent in the world and lies south of Europe and southwest of Asia, from which it is separated by the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, and the Suez Canal. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east. Covering approximately 30 million square kilometers, it comprises 54 internationally recognized countries, making it the continent with the highest number of sovereign states.

From a geographical perspective, Africa displays a remarkable variety of natural regions. The Sahara Desert dominates the north, forming the largest hot desert on Earth. Central Africa features vast tropical savannas, while the Congo Basin contains dense equatorial rainforests. The eastern part of the continent is shaped by the Great Rift Valley, an extensive geological system, and the southern regions are characterized by more temperate climates and extensive plateaus.

Africa also includes several prominent mountain ranges and peaks. The continent’s highest point is Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, rising to 5,895 meters above sea level. Other significant peaks include Mount Kenya (about 5,200 meters) and Ras Dashen in Ethiopia (over 4,500 meters). Many of these elevations, particularly those in the east, are linked to active tectonic processes that have played a major role in shaping the continent’s landscape over millions of years.
